I bought some pink wool in a yarn shop there and decided to improvise a similar version in knit. Stuck on a train, with no patterns or internet access, I used trial and error to come up with this simple lace pattern. It&#8217;s easy to memorize and great for traveling.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/strikkeglad.dk\/11548\/amsterdamsjal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danish translation of this pattern<\/a> is now available (thanks, Marianne!).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finished Measurements:<\/strong> 43 inches by 19 inches (not including fringe)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gauge:<\/strong> 14 st per 4 inches (gauge is not crucial for this pattern)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yarn:<\/strong> DK weight yarn; sample knit with Rowan Pure Wool DK Yarn (025) Tea Rose By The Each<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=krazsknit-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B003D79UQC\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>, 2 balls (272 yds.), and <strong>used every bit of that yarn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Needle Size:<\/strong> 8 US \/ 5 mm<\/p>\n<h3><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/krazyawesome.com\/knitmonster\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/amsterdamlace2.jpg?resize=220%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"amsterdam lace scarf knit pattern\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" \/>Notes<\/h3>\n<p>As this is knit from the point out, it&#8217;s easily adaptable to any weight yarn.<\/p>\n<h3>Abbreviations<\/h3>\n<p>K = knit<\/p>\n<p>st = stitch<\/p>\n<p>YO = yarn over (increase)<\/p>\n<p>K3tog tbl = knit three stitches together through the back loops (decrease)<\/p>\n<p>(alternatively, you can work this decrease: slip one knitwise, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over)<\/p>\n<h3>Pattern<\/h3>\n<p>Cast on 5 stitches.<\/p>\n<p>Row 1: K1, YO, knit to last st, YO, K1<\/p>\n<p>Row 2: K2, purl to last 2 st, K2<\/p>\n<p>Row 3: K1, YO, *K1, YO, K3tog tbl, YO, repeat from * to last two st, K1, YO, K1<\/p>\n<p>Row 4: K2, purl to last 2 st, K2<\/p>\n<p>Repeat these 4 rows until scarf is desired size, ending with a row 2.<\/p>\n<p>Bind off knitwise.<\/p>\n<p>Wash and block.<\/p>\n<p>Fringe may be added if desired.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On vacation in Europe, I admired the lacy, crocheted scarves popular with young women in Amsterdam, which they wore bundled up under their coats.
